Marisa and Josh Peters are the founders of BE SEEN, a movement and nonprofit rooted in lived experience, community and storytelling that sparks action. Together, Marisa and Josh built BE SEEN to change systems, challenge silence, and ensure people are heard sooner and supported longer.

Marisa Peters is a young-onset Stage IIIb Recal Cancer survivor - an author, public speaker, producer, vocalist, music artist and boy-mom to three sons. After years of having her symptoms dismissed, she founded BE SEEN with a clear mission: to eradicate death from colorectal cancer through awareness, access, and prevention, especially for those diagnosed young. Marisa has been featured in The New York Times, Today, US News and World Report, and appeared on NBC, ABC, FOX, and The Kelly Clarkson Show. A former Broadway vocalist, she continues to perform and advocate at major sporting and awareness events nationwide and is cared for by a medical team at UCLA Health.
Josh Peters has been a steadfast caregiver and co-founder of BE SEEN. By day, Josh is an award winning film producer dedicated to elevating bold voices that shape culture and change outcomes. He founded Spark Features responsible for producing and financing 22 films (so far!) that have premiered at Sundance, TIFF, SXSW, and Cannes, earning major awards including an Independent Spirit Award, a Peabody, and multiple Oscar nominations. His work includes JOSEPHINE, RICKY, DÌDI (弟弟), THE LIGHTHOUSE, BLACK BOX DIARIES and PORCELAIN WAR. Most proud of being a baseball and basketball coach and father to three boys.

Dr. Priyanka Wali is a sought-after performing artist and Physician who hosted the podcast, HYPOCHONDRIACTOR with Sean Hayes and currently hosts the show HEALTHSTUFF for iHeart Media. She is independent physician specialized in internal health and obesity working to treat patients in a healthcare system that is too often segmented and fractured, leading to reactive solutions that could have been addressed with earlier prevention and intervention.

See, for over five years, I voiced concerning symptoms to every medical professional in my life. Unheard. Unseen. And then life got real, fast. There was blood on the toilet paper that was unusual and symptoms that grew pervasively more concerning. It was clear things were not normal. Yet, this was dismissed as something that came with giving birth, striving for perfection and being overreactive. As blood became brighter and more prevalent, I knew I needed to BE SEEN. And then I was diagnosed with late-stage Rectal Cancer. It rocked our family to the core and nearly took my life.
The stinger: it never had to happen. Butt cancer (aka - colorectal cancer!) is preventable and avoidable with early detection tools we have available today. If only people had the awareness, access and took action to avoid colorectal cancer in their lifetime.
This is why we launched a movement to amplify important topics that deserve to be seen -- supported by the BE SEEN Foundation.
We will never give up until we eradicate death by colorectal cancer. Because we can today with the tools and tests already available. Time is all we have to lose.

Josh & Marisa Peters sing out on the last 405 drive to UCLA for the final surgery. The Chicks got Marisa and her best friend, Danielle, through high school and now it got our entire community through cancer after naming her tumor Earl. Because we all knew "Earl's Gonna Die." Yep!

Rolling out to my final surgery: the reversal of Marisa's ileostomy and first test using my complete newly remodeled GI system after rectal reconstruction. Eryka Badu would be proud of us singing this one out loud with all the windows down. On this day, May 3, 2022 -- the bag connected to my body for four months was gone for good. No more bag lady here anymore!
